End of the Year Gaming Tag 2022

Seeing as there’s only a few more days until the new year, I figured it was about time I got around to all of my End of the Year reflection type posts. To get the proverbial ball rolling, I thought I’d start with my End of the Year Gaming tag, which I created in 2020, after realizing the lack of any such tag for the gaming community (there’s plenty in the book community). This year, I added a few more questions to keep things interesting. So, let’s get into it!

The Rules
  • Thank the person who tagged you and link to their post.
  • Link to the original creator: Kate @ Blogging with Dragons I want to read your responses
  • Answer the questions. (I’ve included them at the bottom of this post for easy copying and pasting!)
  • Tag however many people as you want!

The Tag

What are you currently playing?

The only thing I’m really playing right now is Dead by Daylight. I’ve had a lot going on in my personal life and it simply feels like too much work right now starting a new game.

Are there any games you started this year that you still intend to finish? List them, if you dare.

It’s pretty safe to say that I will not be finishing any games by the end of this year, with only eleven days left before 2023. I did not finish Pokémon Violet, as I lost interest, and I’d like to get back to Harvestella at some point.

Is there a new release or update you’re still waiting for?

Not really. I was anticipating the remaster of Crisis Core a lot, which released on December 13, but I haven’t even gotten around to picking it up yet.

Any other games you want to pick up before the very end of the year?

Crisis Core Reunion, for sure.

Have you played any events this year that stick out in your memory? If so, which events and what made them so memorable?

Honestly, the anniversary event on Dead by Daylight this year was a lot of fun. Dubbed the Twisted Masquerade, both killers and survivors could unlock masks by finding them randomly appearing on the map and completing other challenges. I really enjoyed it.

What game that was announced this year has you the most excited?

I did a whole post on my most anticipated games of 2023, but I didn’t talk about my excitement for the game Judas, which was just announced at The Game Awards. Judas is spearheaded by Ken Levine, the creator of Bioshock, which is up there with Spyro as one of my favorite games of all time. I can’t help but to be very intrigued by this game that looks a whole lot like Bioshock.

What game did you play this year that surprised you?

I played a lot of games this year that I wouldn’t normally play, thanks to the encouragement of my friends. I ended up playing Fortnite quite a bit in the quest for my friend’s Platinum of the game, so much so that it made my top five played games on PS Wrapped. Likewise, both my partner and my amazing (and very optimistic) friend Meghan from Meghan Plays Games convinced me I could manage a Souls game, and I reluctantly ended up playing Elden Ring with them. That was definitely not on my 2022 bingo card, ha!

I also did try playing Overwatch 2 once or twice and sadly, found I really didn’t care much for the new five man team system. Maybe I just didn’t give myself enough of a chance to get used to it.

Other games that surprised me were the absolutely delightful Stray and Beacon Pines. I was initially skeptical about how exciting playing as a cat could be, but I ended up loving the game and bawling my eyes out at the end. Likewise, I loved the quiet and sinister story of Beacon Pines, with its gameplay reminding me of a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book.

Were there any games that you intentionally did not finish? If so, why?

I pretty much gave up on Pokemon Violet. I just did not care for this title as much as the Sword and Shield installments. Though I beat all of the gyms and finished fighting all of the Titans, I just have no motivation left to defeat the rest of the Star Camps, to go to Victory Road, or to fight the Elite four. Maybe I’ll get back to it one of these days, but I don’t have any intention of picking it up again right now.

What is your favorite trophy/achievement that you’ve obtained this year?

Definitely my platinum trophy for Horizon Forbidden West, as well as the “Nerd” trophy from Beacon Pines.

I also really enjoyed all of the punny trophy names in the game Stray.

Did you purchase any new consoles or upgrades that made a difference in your gaming this year? If so, what did you buy?

This year, my old laptop finally refused to rise out of the ashes like a phoenix, and I was forced to upgrade to something that could not only function, but also run Photoshop and games. Happily, now the proud owner of Asus ROG Zephyrus G14.

Have you changed any of your gaming habits this year and did they make a difference?

Since I now have a laptop, I definitely spent more time playing games on my computer this year and experienced the joys and freedom of Steam for the first time.

What platform did you play on the most this year?

Going to go out on a limb here and say it was my PS5, judging from my astronomical amount of time I’ve spent on Dead by Daylight. I am now realizing that I wish there were an app or website that logged all of one’s hours on different profiles on different gaming platforms (if there is such an app or website, I don’t know of it). Someone make this happen?

What character from a game is your favorite of the year?

Though I loved the cat from Stray and all of the positively adorable characters from Beacon Pines, my absolute favorite character of the year is Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West. The runner up would have to be another character from that same game, Kotallo. It was amazing to see disability representation in an action video game, especially when it was handled with sensitivity.

What is your Personal Game of the year and why?

I played so many phenomenal games this year, including ones that made me cry, like Stray and Beacon Pines. I also logged some serious hours into decent games, like Fire Emblem Warriors : Three Hopes. But out of all the games I played, the most amazing of them was not even a contest, it’s hands down Horizon Forbidden West. Returning to Aloy’s world on current gen consoles was an amazing experience and I am one of the few people out there who would not complain about its predecessor, Horizon Zero Dawn, being remade for PS5. Sorry, not sorry. Anyways, for more on why I loved Horizon Forbidden West, check out My Favorite Things in Horizon Forbidden West.

Have you already started making gaming plans for 2023? If so, what are they?

I definitely have a huge list of games that I want to play in 2023 and it’s honestly a bit overwhelming. But my biggest goal of 2023 is to get back to playing more, or even mostly, single-player games. I have really been neglecting single-player games in favor of playing multiplayer games, namely Dead by Daylight, and I want to get back into experiencing the fantastic stories of solo games.

I tag my Meghan over at Meghan Plays Games to answer this tag! And, of course, if you’d like to answer the questions, consider yourself tagged as well! 🙂

Nice! Sounds like you played a lot of great stuff this year. I only own a Switch, so I don’t have access to the Horizon games, but I’ve heard they are amazing. I’m hoping for Pokemon Violet for Christmas, but I’m worried because of all the glitches. I loved Sword.

    • I did! Aww, thankfully, the Switch has a lot of great exclusives, at least! I hope you get Violet for Christmas and that you love it!!
