End of the Year Gaming Tag 2023

End of the Year Gaming Tag 2023 - Blogging with Dragons

Another year is coming to an end in the blink of an eye. Since it’s December, it’s time to do all of those fun reflective tags that allow me to look back and remember what the heck I did in the past year. I thought I’d start with my End of the Year Gaming tag, which I created in 2020, after realizing that there wasn’t any such tag for the gaming community (there’s plenty in the book community).

The Rules

    • Thank the person who tagged you and link to their post.
    • Link to the original creator: Kate @ Blogging with Dragons (I want to read your responses!)
    • Answer the questions. (I’ve included them at the bottom of this post for easy copying and pasting.)
    • Tag as many people as you want!

The Tag

What are you currently playing?

I am currently playing Harvestella, Sea of Stars, and Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis.

Are there any games you started this year that you still intend to finish?

I definitely want to finish the stories for Sea of Stars and Harvestella this time around. I don’t see Ever Crisis ending any time soon.

Is there a New Release or Update you’re still waiting For?

I mean, I will forever be waiting for Spyro 4 and another Bioshock title.

Any other games you want to pick up before the end of the year?

I wouldn’t mind grabbing Persona 5 Tactica, but it’s not a big priority at the moment.

Have You played any events this year that stick out in your memory? if so, which events and what made them so memorable?

I really enjoyed the Jujutsu Kaisen event on Fortnite. I was just watching the anime at the time of the event, so it felt like really perfect timing, even if I didn’t get to play it a whole lot. It was a lot of fun using the character abilities and acquiring the wallpapers, skins, and mounts.

What game that was announced this year has you the most excited?

I honestly have to say Persona 3: Reload. Persona 3 was my first Persona game and one of, if not, my absolute favorite (I waffle between Persona 3 and 5), of the series. I am super excited to see all of the new updates to the iterations of the game and for players who have only played Persona 5 and spin-offs experience Persona 3 for the first time. While we are on the topic, be sure to check out my post on Why You Need to Play Persona 3.

What Game Did you play this year that surprised you?

After the letdown of Final Fantasy XVI have been pretty good at managing my expectations for this series, and keeping them on the lower side, but I think I let my hopes get a little too high after playing the hard-hitting demo for Final Fantasy XVI. Sadly, I didn’t end up caring much for the final product, which didn’t feel much like an RPG to me. However, I still haven’t even beaten the game, so…

While I wasn’t all too surprised that I was disappointed with a Final Fantasy game (been there done that), I was not expecting to feel letdown by a The Legend of Zelda game. Don’t get me wrong, I was not a huge fan of the narrative choices in either  of the aforementioned games, but I was especially upset that I spent the entirety of Breath of the Wild saving Princess Zelda, who had a pretty great character arc, only for her to be ripped away again within the first ten minutes of the sequel for reasons. And these reasons seemed really weak and for the mere sake of plot devices. After the completely satisfying ending of Breath of the Wild, the entirety of Tears of the Kingdom felt like a major step backwards to me and almost nothing more than a cash grab, at least story-wise.

And if my disappointment with the story weren’t enough, I also really wasn’t that big of a fan of the crafting system in Tears of the Kingdom either, as there was never really an option not to utilize it. Though I recognize what a massive achievement this whole crafting system was for gaming and game development in general, the infinite amount of choices felt overwhelming to me and I had trouble motivating myself to the play the game at times. Did that stop me from putting 175 hours into the game and completing every single shrine and finding every single Lightroot in the hellish Depths? No. But was I happy about it? Not really.

Were there any games that you intentionally did not finish? If so, why?

Well, circumstances beyond my control definitely affected my gaming abilities this year. I did leave Final Fantasy XVI unfinished to prioritize packing, selling our place, and moving, but I also really struggled with wanting to pick the game up. I think I would have finished it had my life not been so crazy, but I am honestly not certain.

What is your favorite trophy/achievement that you’ve obtained this year?

I’d have to say my Platinum trophy for Dead Space. I played the original many times back in the day on my trusty Xbox 360 and never quite managed to 100% it, so I’m happy I was able to at long last.

And as I mentioned before, I was initially very proud that I found all of the Lightroots in the Depths, but when I realized all I got for it was a little in game medallion with absolutely no benefits, my excitement dissipated, and I just felt more embarrassed than anything. At least I had the common sense not to hunt for all of the Koroks this time, as I got rewarded with actual poop in Breath of the Wild.

Did you purchase any new consoles or upgrades that made a difference in your gaming this year? If so, what did you buy?

I actually did not.

Have you changed any of your gaming habits this year and did they make a difference?

I would say that I played a lot more single player games this year, what with Tears of the Kingdom, Resident Evil 4, Dead Space, and Final Fantasy XVI. And sadly, I was definitely not able to game as much after the second half of the year.

What platform did you play on the most this year?

I would say that my Nintendo Switch might be coming out on top this year, since not only have I been moving around so much, but Tears of the Kingdom took up a massive amount of time.

What character from a game is your favorite of the year?

Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil 4 Remake. What can I say? He’s just got it all—sarcasm, brains, corny jokes, looks, and skill.

What is your Personal Game of the year and why?

Probably Resident Evil 4: Remake. Resident Evil is one of my all time favorite franchises, with Resident Evil 4 being at the very top of that list, so it was just a blast seeing it look brand new, less clunky, and even better in some aspects. For more information on my thoughts on this game, check out Why You Need to Play Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Have you already started making gaming plans for 2023? If so, what are they?

My plans for next year are to play catch up with a lot of the games I didn’t get to finish, like Final Fantasy XVI or to finally get to play Baldur’s Gate 3. I will also definitely be picking up Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and Persona 3: Reload on Day One as well.

  1. I love this tag and I think I’m going to grab it. I still need to finish Sea of Stars but it was one that I was looking forward to since I downloaded the trial. I also need to finish ToTK but I’ve been intentionally putting it off because I don’t want the game to end ? I hope you enjoy whichever game you pick up next!

    • I do the same thing with games–I put off finishing them because I never want to them to end! I still haven’t finished Little Dragons Cafe because of this, haha. I hope you do the tag–can’t wait to see your answers!

  2. Groovy to see Sea of Stars get some attention! Boy did I love that one. I want to play through it again pronto. But for me the best game was Tears of the Kingdom, fo’ sho’. Quite the experience.

Cocoon, Mario Wonder, and Jusant are also very high up my list. Nintendo also got me addicted to F-Zero 99 and now I need help.
