Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag 2021

I am once again pretty late with this year’s Midyear Book Freak-out Tag, but hey, at least I’m consistent, right? And it’s still technically mid-year. I honestly don’t know where the time has gone, and I cannot help, but to freak out at how little I’ve actually read so far this year. According to Goodreads, I’ve only 37 books so far. Thank goodness that Goodreads keeps track of what I’ve read and when or else I’d have no clue how to answer the questions of this tag.

Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2021

Mask of Mirrors

If I had to pick only one, I’d say my favorite book that I’ve read so far this year was The Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick.

Best Sequel of 2021 so far

Starsight by Brandon Sanderson is the only sequel I’ve read this year, if you don’t count my reread of Windwitch by Susan Dennard. Surprisingly, I found that I liked both of these novels more than their predecessors–no sequel syndrome here!

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To

After the ending to The Memory of SoulsI have been dying to read The House of Always. I’m currently reading it right now, and I’m about 40% of the way through it. I also really want to read The Black Coast, as I’ve heard so many good things about it.

Most Anticipated Release of the Second Half of 2021

I’ve managed to narrow it down to five off the top of my head. Winterlight by Kristen Britain, The Bone Shard Emperor, Blood of the Chosen by Django Wexler, The Excalibur Curse by Kiersten White, and Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson!

I know I said I would narrow it down to five, but I forgot to include The Liar’s Knot, the sequel to The Mask of Mirrors. And that’s just not okay. I’m super excited to see where the follow up to my favorite book of the year goes!

Biggest Disappointment

It pains me to say this, but Witchshadow by Susan Dennard was the biggest disappointment for me by far this year.

Biggest surprise

I was shocked and dismayed to find that I did not enjoy The Wolf of Oren Yaro, which I really thought I would love.

Side note: I totally just realized I never even posted my review of this book. Whoops.

Favorite New Author

Probably Jenn Lyons! I am reading my way through her entire series, A Chorus of Dragons, and really admire how well she blends a great sense of humor into such serious and intricate books, with a huge cast of characters.

Newest Fictional Crush

Mask of Mirrors

Hmm, perhaps The Rook from The Mask of Mirrors.

Newest Favorite Character

Mask of Mirrors

I really, really liked the main female protagonist in The Mask of Mirrors, Ren. To quote my own review of the book: “I adored the main character Ren from the very beginning. She is intelligent, cunning, observant, persuasive, beautiful, and unafraid to get her hands dirty. These character traits aren’t limited to when she plays her role as a noble known as Atla Renata either. Ren, who slips into many roles and disguises throughout The Mask of Mirrors, is at her heart the poor street urchin who lost her only family, her mother, to disease, and had to make it on her own for the rest of her life. Unfortunately, she wound up as “Finger” for a group of child thieves ran by a monstrously abusive woman named Ondrakja. The only good thing that came out of this horrendous childhood, were Ren’s ability to develop and master a unique set of skills and for her to find a new family of her own in other Fingers. Ren forms a family with a brother named Sedge and a sister named Tess, who goes above and beyond pretending to be Ren’s maid and seamstress during her plan.”

Book That Made You Cry

Under the Whispering Door definitely made me cry.

Book that made you happy

The Will and the Wilds

The Will and the Wilds was such a feel good and magical read for me. Look for my review of this novel on Monday!

Favorite Book to Movie Adaptation You’ve Seen This Year?

I have not read the book it was based on, but I watched Behind Her Eyes on Netflix, and enjoyed it. I don’t know that I’ve watched any other book to movie or TV show adaptations this year.

Favorite Review You’ve Written This Year?

I don’t have favorite reviews. Is that weird? I can’t remember what I’ve read and also can only vaguely remember what I’ve written in my reviews either. So every time I read something, it’s like reading it for the first time.

Most Beautiful Book You Bought or Received So Far This Year?

Unfortunately, the pandemic has really cut down on how many physical copies of books I have bought this year. The only physical copy of a book I bought was Witchshadow. I appreciate that it’s cover art matches the rest of the series and reflects the darker nature of the content. I did recently purchase the kindle edition of illustrated edition of Robin Hobb’s The Assassin’s Apprentice and I predict that that will be a shoe in for most beautiful book, and one I will want to purchase a physical copy of.

What Books Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year?

SO, SO many books. There’s just not enough time! I obviously need to read everything in my most anticipated release of the second half of 2021 section, but I will also need to reread the predecessors to these new releases. That means I’ll need to reread the entirety Green Rider series before Winterlight, Mask of Mirrors before The Liar’s Knot, Ashes of the Sun before Blood of the Chosen, and so on and so forth, because as mentioned, I have an absolutely atrocious memory. Every time I read a book, it’s like reading it for the first time.
