My Most Anticipated Games of 2023

My Most Anticipated Games in 2023 - Blogging with Dragons

RIP all of our wallets—2023 is on the way, and with it, a veritable plethora of amazing games of all shapes and sizes. Here are my most anticipated games of 2023, in no particular order.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Initial release date: March 24, 2023

Developer: Capcom

Publishers: Capcom, Capcom U.S.A., Inc.
Series: Resident Evil
Mode: Single-player

Genre: Survival horror

Platforms: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows

Resident Evil 4 was my introduction to the Resident Evil series and it’s been near and dear to my heart ever since. And what’s not to like about Leon S. Kennedy, who faces down all kinds of evil with perfectly coiffed hair and well-timed, but often cringey, witticism? I’ve bought and played this game on the PS2, GameCube, PS3, and PS4. I cannot wait to buy it again for my PS5 and to experience the story with updated graphics and a more modern take on the original game.

Dead Space Remake

Initial release date: January 27, 2023
Developer: Motive Studio
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Series: Dead Space

Mode: Single-player video game
Genres: Survival horror, Shooter game, Adventure game
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows

I played this game with my dad back in the day on my Xbox 360. We played it (and its sequel) many, many times. To this day, I still consider it one of the scariest games I’ve ever played. Despite having all kinds of science fiction-y weapons at your disposal, the game excels at both jump scares and a creeping horror that pervades the entire game. I’m ready to fire up my trusty Line Gun and to battle my through hoards of necromorphs as  Isaac Clarke once more.

Fire Emblem : Engage

Initial release date: January 20, 2023
Developer: Intelligent Systems

Publishers: Nintendo, Nintendo of America Inc.
Series: Fire Emblem
Mode: Single-player video game
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Genres: Tactical role-playing game, Adventure game

Though I’m not exactly crazy about the design of the protagonist, affectionately(?) called Toothpaste-chan or Crest-chan due to their colorful hair, I have to play this latest installment in the Fire Emblem series, which has become a favorite ever since I played Three Houses. I’m really interested to see how this game balances its fan service, with the summoning of legendary Fire Emblem characters at the disposal of the player and protagonist, with its own narrative.

Persona 4 Golden/Persona 3 Portable remasters

Initial release date: January 19, 2023
Developer: Atlus

Publishers: Sega
Series: Persona
Mode: Single-player video game
Platform: Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC
Genres: JRPG

Watch the trailer here.

Before I fell hard for Joker and the Phantom Thieves, Persona 3 was my favorite of the Persona games. I’ve played Persona 3 FES alone two or three times and started a playthrough of Portable yet another time. I can’t wait to revisit The Midnight Hour and Tartarus yet again. And I’ve never had a chance to play the Golden version of Persona 4, so I’m looking forward to that as well.

The Legend of Zelda : Tears of the Kingdom

Initial release date: May 12, 2023
Developers: Nintendo, Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development

Genre: Action-adventure game
Mode: Single-player video game
Platform: Nintendo Switch

The Legend of Zelda, need I say more? If you’re not convinced, Breath of the Wild was a beautiful game that moved me to tears and I cannot wait to return to this iteration of Hyrule again.

Final Fantasy XVI

Initial release date: June 22, 2023
Developer: Creative Business Unit III
Publisher: Square Enix
Series: Final Fantasy
Platform: PlayStation 5

Watch the latest trailer here.

Though I have mostly given up on Square Enix after the devastatingly disappointing Final Fantasy XV and the lackluster Kingdom Hearts 3, I simply have to return to the series that started my love affair with JRPGS one last time. I am cautiously optimistic that Final Fantasy XVI with its political intrigue, turmoil, and tale of revenge will be the one to finally return the series to its former glory.

Fatal Frame/Project Zero : Mask of the Lunar Eclipse

Initial release date: March 8, 2023
Developer: Koei Tecmo Games CO., LTD
Publisher: Koei Tecmo Games CO., LTD
Series: Fatal Frame

This past October, I finally played Fatal Frame : Maiden of the Black Water, and despite the story not making a whole lot of sense to me, I really enjoyed the game and its unique gameplay. And soon enough, I was dreaming of creepy shrine maidens visiting me in my sleep. So I definitely have to check out this newest remaster in the series.

Honorable Mentions

These are games that I’m not sure about purchasing or aren’t actually new releases.

Horizon Burning Shores

Initial Release Date:  April 19, 2023

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Developer: Guerilla
Mode: Single-player video game

Platforms: PS5, PS4

Genre: Adventure game, Action role-playing game, Shooter game, Fighting game, Platform game

Technically, this is a DLC to a game that’s already been released in 2022, but as Horizon Forbidden West was my Game of the Year of 2022, I have to express how excited I am at the prospect to return to the wilds of the west with Aloy again, especially since the only other DLC was available solely for VR.

Initial release date: January 24, 2023
Publisher: Square Enix
Engine: Luminous Engine
Developer: Luminous Productions
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows
Genres: Action role-playing game, Shooter game, Action-adventure game, Platform game, Fighting game, Adventure

Though I was super hyped about this game way back when it was first announced as its code name of Project Athia, I honestly haven’t decided yet if I am going to purchase Forspoken. While the story interests me and the game is gorgeous, the gameplay is not really not my cup of tea (this is based off of the demo I tried). I also wasn’t a huge fan of the banter between Frey and her magic bracelet called Cuff. Regardless, Forspoken is most likely not going to be a day one purchase for me, as I’m way more excited about other games on the list.

Other Games on my radar

Here are the other games that I am hoping will get a release date or an announcement in the near future.

Initial release date: 2023
Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Platforms: Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows
Genres: Shooter game, Action role-playing game, Action-adventure game

As I’ve said before, the fact that this game is by Bethesda and it is marketed as Skyrim in space really has me intrigued. Though I am primarily a PS5 and Switch gamer, I do think my laptop could handle this game and that I might have to give it a try.

Silent Hill

I’ve never played a Silent Hill game in my life and I’d love the opportunity to do so. Thankfully, plenty of new titles in the series were just announced. The trailers for the newest entry in the series, both the Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill F have definitely got my interest. I’m just hoping I can avoid peeing my pants.

Spyro 4

Another year, another lack of a Spyro 4 announcement. I’m just as confused about this as Spyro and Sparx. When will my little purple toasty boy have his day in the sun once more? In the meantime, I will continue to resent Spyro’s counterpart, Crash Bandicoot, for receiving more and more new games.

There you have it, my most anticipated games of 2023 and a few little extras on the side. What games are you most looking forward to in the New Year?

I’m excited about Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4. I didn’t know they were doing a Spyro 4!! Yay! The new Fatal Frame looks good, and I’m interested in the new FF, but I haven’t played one in a while.

    • The new LoZ looks amazing, as they always do! I don’t know how we are going to fit all of these games in.
Unfortunately, a new Spyro hasn’t been announced, it is just something I’m hoping for.

  2. I am so irrationally excited for BOTW2 and cannot wait for it to come out! Also looking forward to the RE4 remake — hope its more of the re2 remake and not so much re3 remake disappointment

    • Oh my gosh, I hope you are right about RE4! I was so disappointed with RE3, especially after how much fun the RE2 remake was.

I am also so hyped for BOTW2! Also slightly concerned about fitting all of these games in ? I guess it’s a good problem to have!
