1. Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson
This one singlehandedly pulled me out of one of my worst reading slumps ever.
Premise: Inspired by Final Fantasy X, this novel blends heartfelt characters with romance and hints of historical fiction.

2. The Blighted Stars by Megan E. O’Keefe
I will never stop raving about this book—sorry not sorry.
Premise: In a crumbling, class-divided spacefaring society, a bodyguard spy and a scientist with clashing loyalties are forced into uneasy cooperation when stranded on a deadly planet.
Why it works:
Enemies-to-lovers tension done right

3. Godkiller by Hannah Kaner
Another frequent flyer on my TTT lists for good reason.
Premise: A god-hunting heroine, a disillusioned knight, a mysterious young girl, and an adorable animal companion find their fates tangled together.

Post apocalyptic world with high stakes
4. Blood over Bright Haven by H.M. Long
This was my most recent slump cure, hooking me from page one.
Premise: Survivors of a deadly blight attempt to breach the magical barrier protecting the city of Tiran knowing that entering could kill them just as surely as staying outside. But the safety of the city hides a deadly secret of its own.
Why it works:
Dark academia vibes with high-stakes survival
Moral dilemmas and layered world lore
Perfect for Fullmetal Alchemist fans
5. The Alchemists of Loom by Elise Kova
I loved this so much in 2019 that I reread it immediately.
Premise: In a steampunk-inspired world, a thief teams up with a dragon to overthrow the oppressive regime controlling their land.
Why it works:
Inventive, original magic and tech systems
Ruthless, clever heroine
Action sequences that fly by
6. The Silverblood Promise by James Logan
A fantasy debut that grabbed me right away.
Premise: A roguish main character investigates his estranged father’s death, crossing paths with a notorious thief, a gutsy street kid in a city of shadows, and a legendary race of beings that might not be mere myth.
Why it works:
Mystery-thriller pacing in a fantasy world
Lovable found-family dynamic
Sharp wit and noir-style atmosphere
7. Blood of the Old Kings by Kim Sung Il
The opening scene is still seared into my mind.
Premise: Seeking revenge for her family’s murder and the subjugation of her homeland, Loran forges a pact with a dragon inside a volcano—altering the fate of the empire forever.
Why it works:
High-drama, cinematic opening
Complex female lead
Dragons with real narrative weight
8. These Burning Stars by Bethany Jacobs
This is revenge coming at you from three unforgettable directions.
Premise: Three morally gray women pursue intersecting vendettas across a galaxy teetering on the edge of chaos.

9. The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart
One of the best fantasy novels I’ve ever read, period.
Premise: In a crumbling empire, a daughter fights to prove herself as heir while unrest brews and ancient magic stirs.

10. Breath of the Dragon by Shannon Lee and Fonda Lee
So much more than a martial arts tournament story.
Premise: In a world where dragon-gifted abilities known as Breathmarks shape destiny, a young fighter faces political intrigue, family pressures, and battles that test his very beliefs.
Why it works:
Dynamic, high-tension fight scenes
Themes of honor, morality, and identity
Perfect for fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender
Reading slumps are inevitable, but the right book can jolt you right out of them.
